A few weeks ago I went to Instagram to ask for tips for how to increase my milk supply after I noticed a pretty significant dip in supply. Boy did you all come at me with ALL of the ideas! Since there are so many things out there about increasing your milk supply, I thought I would round up all of your tips so that other mamas out there who need this can access it whenever they need to!
- New Pump Parts
This was the resounding answer from most of you when I said I had noticed a decrease in output. I only used my pump for 4 months with Liam and 3 of those were on maternity leave so I never got to a point where I needed to replace them so it never even crossed my mind! Thank goodness for Amazon Prime and quick shipping!
2. Blue Gatorade
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! I really think any Gatorade would do the trick but all of the online forums and y’alls recommendations were for Gatorade of the Blue Variety so that’s what I’ve been drinking. I also drank a Blue Powerade Zero and saw an increase in supply so I think either brand would work.
3. Oreos
I’ve gotta admit, this was one suggestion I was surprised by but SO delighted to hear. I don’t need an excuse to eat an Oreo but if you tell me it will help boost my milk supply? Don’t mind if I do!
4. Lactation Bars and/or Cookies
I’ve been eating my Lactation Bars like they’re going out of style. They’re full of galactagogues and can be made gluten and dairy free. Plus, they’re just yummy in general and are even husband and toddler approved. Liam calls them “Nana Cookies”
5. Power Pumping
You can find information for Power Pumping all over Pinterest but it is a proven way to increase your milk supply! I personally hate my pump but if push comes to shove, you better believe I’ll be hooking myself up to get an increase in production! Typically the power pumping cycle looks like:
- Pump for 20 minutes
- Rest for 10 minutes
- Pump for 10 minutes
- Rest for 10 minutes
- Pump for 10 minutes
6. Body Armour Drinks
I personally wasn’t a fan of these but I’ve seen people swear by them. Similar to Gatorade, it’s all about the hydration here. They are super hydrating thanks to the coconut water
7. Beer
Whether its the hops or the yeast, I always notice a boost in supply after drinking a beer or two. Now, when I’m trying to boost supply I tend to opt for something a little heavier like a Blue Moon or something of the like. I’m not saying a Michelob Ultra won’t increase your supply but I’m not sure you’ll see as much of a return since it’s super light.
8. Mothers Milk Tea
I’m not much of a tea drinker but again, I’ll do just about anything in the name of saving my milk! I’ve heard it doesn’t taste great though so this might be one you want to let cool on the counter and then chug.
9. Pink Drink from Starbucks
I have yet to try this one out for myself but like Oreos, I need no excuse to go to Starbucks so I will gladly try this one out to see if it makes a difference!
10. Supplements
Fenugreek, Blessed Thistle, Brewers Yeast. All of these are known to boost milk supply. But I was interested to hear that these can also have the opposite effect on some women so be careful!
